Lacrosse is sticking around

Elle Steele and Rebecca Wood

Rebecca Wood, Osceola freshman, joined the lacrosse team simply because of curiosity.  “I’ve always has been interested in it, but when I realized that Osceola had a lacrosse team, I thought it would be fun to try it out. I like the team aspect of it, along with the sport itself,” she said. Teamwork has always been important to Rebecca since she was a kid. She never wanted anyone to feel left out and always tried to include everyone. Rebecca said, “When you’re on a team, and play a sport you enjoy, it makes the whole experience better.” Rebecca said,  “I play defense because I’m better at catching than throwing.” She’s been playing lacrosse since the beginning of this school year, but wants to stay with it all through high school. In pre-season, she and others went to conditioning but didn’t get to practice with their sticks, so she practiced with her stick at home instead. Rebecca said, “I try and practice every day outside of school on days that we don’t have practice. I want to keep improving, so I try my best at home and on the field.” Rebecca has never been on a lacrosse team before, so she practices extra hard to not let her team down. “I wish I did sooner because it is such a fun sport and is full of new experiences every day.” She has met many new friends and is grateful to be a part of the team. “We usually have games 1-3 times a week, but practice is every day that we don’t have a game.” She likes how often the games are, because even though they are frequent, they are not every day of the week. Their practice is an hour and a half to two hours, depending on the day. Sofia Torres, 9th grade, said, “I wanted to play a new sport because I always love trying new things and I ended up really liking it.” She loves being on a team and when asked about her favorite part of the game, she exclaimed, “meeting new teammates and the excitement of it all.” Even though this is Sofia’s first year playing lacrosse, she has “already learned so much,” and is excited to continue to play all through high school.
