Darian the discus star
When you hear about a track meet, the first thing you think of is a bunch of people running, right? But not Darian Hooker; he competes in discus, shot put and high jump. “I love track because I get points for the team without having to do any running,” he said.
In high jump, you have to jump over a bar, without touching or knocking it down in attempt to jump higher than your competitor. For discus, you have to throw a disc farther than your opponent can. Shot put is when you are throwing in a pushing motion a “shot” as far as you can. At practices he only run 3 warm-up laps then practices his throwing and jumping. “I throw till my arm hurts and I jump for a living,” he said.
Darian, junior, recently received 1st place in discus, 3rd place in shot put and 8th place in high jump. “Heck yeah, I’m proud of myself,” he said. If he does well, he doesn’t have much time to celebrate, considering his events are back-to-back. The best he has thrown in discus is 137 feet, and 44 feet in shot put. In high jump, his best is 6 feet. He hopes he did well at Districts yesterday, April 16th.
