Age of Ultron smashes expectations

REVIEW

Avengers Age of Ultron came out two weeks ago and I feel like it is safe to write a review on the movie that has been talked about for years since the first Avengers came out in 2012. Just in case you have not seen this fantastic movie… SPOILER ALERT!

Now let’s get down to business. Avengers Age of Ultron was an amazing movie from start to finish and was full of great character development, clever humor, and superb acting and effects.

The powerhouse cast from the first Avengers film returned and didn’t disappoint as Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, and Jeremy Renner all delivered great performances. New comers to the franchise such as James Spader, Aaron Taylor Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen also were well tailored for their roles. James Spader was an excellent choice for the voice of Ultron as he brought over his Ray Reddington style from the hit TV show The Blacklist and it meshed perfectly with the murderous robot.

Elizabeth Olsen played the new character Scarlet Witch and Aaron Taylor Johnson played Quicksilver. The two are twins and have been experimented on by the remaining Hydra forces. Quicksilver has super speed and Scarlet Witch has telepathic powers. The pair is from the fictional city of Sokovia and end up siding with Ultron in the beginning due to a mutual hatred of Tony Stark who was responsible for the death of their parents. I feel like both Johnson and Olsen did good overall and the Russian accents they needed to pull off were rather decent.

Getting all of the characters involved in this massive movie seemed like a tall task at first, but director Josh Whedon and his crew did a great job and gave everyone a fair amount of screen time and story development. The character that took the biggest leap was Hawkeye, the sharp-shooting archer, who seemed pushed to the side in the first film. Hawkeye has a family and he becomes more of a leader especially when Hawkeye delivers a motivating speech to Scarlet Witch during the final battle in Sokovia.

With so many epic battles throughout the entire movie it is hard to pick a favorite one. “My favorite scene was the battle between the Hulk and the Hulk buster Iron Man,” said sophomore Ryan Kovacsev. “It was just so cool when Hulk spit his tooth out and Tony said ‘I’m sorry,’” said Ryan. Freshman Brianna Varner enjoyed the involvement of the two female protagonists of Black Widow and Scarlet Witch. “Their roles were not as big as the others like Thor and Iron Man but, they were still critical in the success of the movie,” said Brianna.

Overall, Avengers Age of Ultron was a stellar movie that had constant action from top to bottom and put you on the edge of your seat for the entire movie. Out of five stars I would rate the movie a perfect 5/5. There were no giant flaws or plot holes left behind, all of the characters played a significant role in one way or another, and it set up the next major marvel film Captain America Civil War which is set to come out next year between March and May.
