At Osceola Fundamental High School, students know Mr. Pile primarily as the social studies educator, but outside the classroom, Mr. Pile has quite the creative hobby- raising hens! While teaching his students and grading papers occupying him throughout the week, his favorite way to unwind is spending time with his hens and watching them run around freely. For Mr. Pile, his hens are more than just farm animals, they are a source of joy and entertainment. “They each have their own personalities,” he said.
“Some are bold, some are curious, and a few of them like to follow me around like little shadows.” One of his favorite pastimes is watching the playful interactions between his hens and his Beagle named Bluey and Dachshund named Bear who don’t quite get along with the hens much. But due to Bluey being about same the size, if not smaller, as the hens, they are very playful with one another quite often. “It’s hilarious,” Mr. Pile said.
“Bluey will run across the yard, and suddenly, the hens decide to chase him. It’s like a game of tag, but with feathers flying everywhere!” Beyond the fun, Mr. Pile finds comfort in his hobby. Tending to his hens gives him a break from the fast pace of school life, and he enjoys the simple routine of feeding them, collecting fresh eggs, and making sure they have a safe and happy space. His grandchildren also love visiting to see the hens, and the hens are surprisingly friendly with them.
“The kids get such a kick out of feeding them treats,” he says. While many students might not expect their teachers to have hobbies as unique as raising hens, Mr. Pile proves that passions outside the classroom can bring joy and balance to life. His story is a reminder that behind every teacher, there’s a personal world full of surprises.
