Donating blood is a critical component of the healthcare system in Florida because it guarantees the availability of blood for emergencies, surgeries, and treatments in hospitals and medical centers.
According to One Blood, “Blood is critical in Florida because of the high number of people who live in the state or need transfusions for sickle cell disease, trauma injuries, and cancer patients”. Because blood has a limited shelf life, continual donations are needed to keep supplies within reach. American Red Cross and One Blood are examples of companies in Florida that organize blood drives throughout the state in schools, workplaces, and even community centers. This enables people to donate blood in a safe, convenient manner in addition to contributing to a life-saving act.
According to one blood “Each donation is separated, tested, and used to assist those patients who require it the most”. Recently, Osceola hosted a blood drive where a large number of people were given the opportunity to donate. Donors were given a free T-shirt to serve as a token of appreciation. Such events serve to strengthen community involvement in blood donations whether it is through donating blood, volunteering or raising awareness. Even though there are restrictions for who is eligible to donate blood, the process is simple and quick for those who are.
One donation saves four people and blood is continuously needed. There are chances for everyone in Florida due to blood drives held on a regular basis.
According to the One Blood coordinator on campus Tuesday, only 15 students signed up to donate.
