Due to Madeira Beach Fundamental School moving in, a new schedule is in effect, and
Warriors, including teachers, are adjusting. The earlier start time, at 7:00 rather than 7:25 a.m. has students working on ways to cope with sleep schedules.
The block schedule has Warriors taking all class periods Mondays, then A Day, and B Day after that,
and so on. Freshman Allyson Mae-West says it’s affecting her sleep. “I have to wake up at 5 a.m. because I have to drive to my cousin’s house, and I wouldn’t be able to work better because my brain won’t be fully functioning since I’m tired.”
Isabella Jackson, also 9th grade, has her own technique on how to go to bed earlier that seems to be working for her. “For me, drinking milk helps me fall asleep, and turning off my phone right before bed.”
Vivienne Kocsis, 9th grade, said she is “reliving my middle school Clearwater days, which I hated because I had to stay in a singular class for an hour, and I was falling asleep.”
One remedy is from one freshmen and Naomi Coleman, who suggested that “Splashing water on your face and eating peppermint can help” to stay awake in school.
Lastly, Spanish teacher Mr. Kontrick shared his opinion on the block schedule, and how to
keep up with homework. “I am opposed to this block schedule, and I think many teachers would agree with me. I don’t know what to think of it, but any advice I can give is to understand what classes are coming up, get used to it quicky, and keep an agenda. You are going to need it now more than ever.”
Finally, fellow Osceola Warriors have one last tip for classmates on how to wake up earlier before leaving to school to get the full experience and be able to keep up with assignments. Savannah Lake, 9th grade, said, “Getting a little more sleep, going to bed earlier, and resetting a new alarm” would be
beneficial.
