Last Friday, Osceola students attended Model UN and returned with a victory. Model UN is a conference held for students at SPC. The conference helps students practice public speaking, teamwork, and adapt good study skills as well as preparation. For weeks, students researched the country they were assigned to represent in the mock United Nations conference. For Victorya Santos and Lola Shumow, their work paid off as they won ‘Best Delegate’. Throughout the conference, every student, known as a delegate, was monitored by a Chairperson. The second time Osceola students attended Model UN on April 7th, 2017. On April 24th,2017 Kyla McDonald wrote about the Model UN attended by students that year. That year, Mr. Yarborough was the sponsor of Model UN and told Kyla “You learn the art of compromise, which is a skill that will be useful for the rest of your life”. Kyla reported that multiple meetings were held prior to the conference, aimed to help students revise and edit the materials they needed for Model UN. This year, Mr. Valentine was the sponsor of the club and held similar meetings. Mr. Valentine provided packets of information for students interested in attending the conference, then he assigned students a country to represent and the assembly that they would meet with. The Conference ended well with students proud of the work they did, Carly Carbaugh attended this year, and she said “The conference taught me how to properly prepare for future years and it was also a good learning opportunity because I heavily researched the country I was assigned to”. This year and seven years ago, in 2017, Warriors attended Model UN and had lots of fun.
