Assembly set for cyber security
A assembly will take place in the auditorium on Friday, January 30th in light of social media bullying that has recently taken place in Osceola High School. An app was downloaded by students that allow them to post pictures of others or of things anonymously. Some students posted obscene pictures of other students and teachers that led the school to schedule an assembly.
“Although #life was an issue at our school, this assembly is to address all social media and bring awareness to how you can prevent being a victim of this abuse,” said OFHS Principal Mr. Bohnet. A sheriff from Pinellas County named Deputy Kelly will come in and talk to students about how they can protect themselves from social media bullying and the legal consequences that may result if you do post obscene comments or pictures. “We’re trying to send the message to our students that there will be consequences to posting inappropriate things on the web (that)can become very serious and lead to legal consequences. We don’t want that,” said Mr. Bohnet.
The goal of this assembly is to also make students aware of the safety/security that is available for some social media sites. If this security isn’t available for a social media site, the hope is to make students aware of how they can actively protect themselves.
“Students need to partake in their own protection on the web so that they won’t fall into bad situations. If students protect their private information/pictures, then no one will have access to them and they will be safe from others out to discredit them,” said Mr. Bohnet.
