Lawmakers attempt to delay school times

A Florida lawmaker wants you to sleep in! Back in the fall, Representative Matt Gaetz of Fort Walton Beach filed a bill to restrict high schools from starting before 8 a.m. according to an article published on the Tampa Bay Times website.
Now the legislature plans to research the topic.
A new study has showed that most high school students are sleep deprived and only 8% of high school students get enough sleep, according to the Center for Advancing Health. A study conducted by the National Sleep Foundation found that delaying the start time of school increased the students sleep, academic achievement, and their overall mood.
However, students at Osceola don’t think that we should delay the school time. “I wouldn’t want to start school later because we would get out of school later too, (and)I always just try to take a nap when I get home,” said Taylor Ballard, 9th grade.
“If they started school later that means that we would get out later, and that means students would start their homework later, and doing so would mean going to bed later. So I don’t think students would be getting any more sleep than they already are,” said Meg Fister, 9th grade.
It’s not clear when the results of the research will be made public, but we’ll follow up with the news when lawmakers have more information.
