The biometric battle heats up
State lawmakers are deciding the future of biometric technology in Florida schools.
The Florida Senate is voting on a proposal to ban biometric scanners in public schools. Biometric scanners come in the form of palm scanners, fingerprint scanners, and even iris (eye) scanners. These systems are designed to link students with accounts for lunch money, and thus speeding the lunch line up.
In light of recent events (such as the data theft of millions of Target customers), some, such as Senator Dorothy Hukill, such suggest that biometric scanners pose a risk to students, as it could lead to Identity Theft.
Others, such as Mrs. Nolan from Student Services, think otherwise about scanners.
“If you have a lunch account, it’s an easy way to pay,” Mrs. Nolan commented. “I think it’s a good idea.”
Mrs. Lang, the Cafeteria Manager, added that “We are supposed to be getting new scanners, and those are expected to speed up the lunchline.”
