Shorter searches students’ lockers

Six thefts have been reported to Deputy Shorter since the beginning of this school year. “Most involved money, ranging from $4 to $16 dollars, which was left in backpacks that were placed in unsecure lockers. However, an IPod-5, was also stolen,” said Shorter. “The best way to avoid being a victim is to make sure any unattended property is locked up. Money should be kept on your person,” he continued.

However, “If you are a victim, report it,” said Shorter. “There are many cameras throughout the campus, so there is a chance of solving the crime.” The consequences for thefts that have stolen items depends on if the items stolen are recovered or not, according to Shorter. “A person could face criminal theft charges, which means they will be arrested, or school sanctions, which could be an out of school suspension, which means you go to IAC as well.” he said.

On Tuesday October 1st, we found deputy shorter checking lockers and removing backpacks from the unsecured lockers. When we asked him what he was doing, he said, “I’ve been going around every period checking them.” Shorter also informed us, “On Tuesday, and periodically, I check unsecure lockers for unattended property. I collect the property and wait for the owner to come claim it. I then counsel the owner about campus thefts and how not to become a victim.”
