OHS sophomore Ian Shown is the Youth Volunteer of the year. Though many are volunteering for Bright Futures scholarships, Shown is volunteering out of the goodness of his heart. In any case, Shown feels that his help is not volunteer work at all.
The recognition came from recommendations by staff and faculty at OHS.
“I do a lot of stuff that’s not volunteer related, but stuff people don’t want to do,” said Shown.
Shown who also completes volunteer services under Boy Scout services is well prepared for the challenge and juggles around 2 to 3 hours, or a total of 6 hours each week between the two.
“I show up 2 hours early to band practice to clean up and shine everyone’s instruments,” said Shown.
Shown has been volunteering for so long that it’s not a problem for him. In fact, Shown enjoys the work.
“I wouldn’t say it’s hard work but yeah I like it. Again, it’s mostly stuff people don’t want to do,” said Shown.
Shown shared a bit of advice about his volunteering success to his fellow Warriors.
“Get involved in band and academics team and a bunch of other junk,” said Shown.
