Four Warriors will take on 14 teams on Saturday, February 23rd in a battle of brains at USF St. Pete. With 14 teams each composed of 4 members and some with 1 alternative, Osceola’s Marine Science team is in for a competitive NOSB competition. NOSB which stands for, National Ocean Science Bowl has been around since 1998 has expanded to over 300 schools within more than 25 states, with 2,000 students competing annually.
Before competing, the team has to practice and often holds meetings after school. One of the team members, OHS senior, Kathryn Harring explained, “ The purpose of the Marine Science club is to help out students who are flat out interested in Marine science and we take what we learn and compete against other schools.”
Taking what the team learns about marine life, they bring their extensive knowledge to the table at NOSB in hopes of competing nationally or even gaining other valued prizes.
“The National Ocean Science Bowl competition they hold is to basically assess the knowledge of the marine science world. It gives an opportunity for students to learn marine science and it opens up a scholarship opportunity for the students,” said Marine Science teacher Mrs. Copello.
“That’s what we’re competing in (NOSB); to test our knowledge about marine sciences,” said Harring.
Harring and her other team members: Leah Lindell,12th grade, Brooke Loney 10th, grade, and Krystal Orzel 12th, grade are rearing to go next week.
“Can’t wait for competition,” said Harring.
