After one competition, the Osceola academic team took home 2nd place and is looking forward to their next competition in November against other local high schools. Since September, the Osceola academic team has been diligently practicing and working towards competitions. Last Thursday, October 18th, the academic team traveled to Dunedin High School where they competed against Dunedin, Pinellas Park and Clearwater. The advisor of the team is chemistry teacher Ms. Alvarez. Sheba Saji, 12th grade, has been the captain of the academic team for about a month now and is very excited about moving forward towards more victories. There are about 11 or 12 kids on the team. Sheba said, “The thing I like the most about the academic team is the level of complexity and it is very competitive and challenging.” In the past the students representing Osceola have won first place twice and took fifth place in the final district competition last spring. Some of the questions that are asked during the competition are science, math, literature, history, French, technology, art, and social studies. The team has competed against Dixie, Pinellas Park, St.Pete, Dunedin and Clearwater. The next competition is November 1st at Palm harbor. Mariko Thompson, 12th grade, commented on the competition, “Some are nervous more than others, most are calm. Me personally, I’m in the middle. When the competition starts I calm down. Hopefully we take first place.”
