Science teacher takes the ice
“I use a strip of plastic to practice puck shots and handling, and duct tape a sheet/blanket on the side of my house to practice shooting. My neighbors think I’m crazy.” This science teacher is talking about his favorite hobby, which is ice hockey.
Mr. Flanagan, 9th grade Earth/Space science teacher, plays ice hockey for the Oldsmar Grape Apes. “I have some buds on the team with me.” Mr. Flanagan exclaimed. Even though he didn’t play ice hockey when he attended Eckerd College, he did play roller hockey.
The Ohio native moved to Florida as a child and has lived for most of his life. He thought of it as GOAL. Although most people don’t think of ice hockey in Florida, that does not stop Mr. Flanagan from playing his beloved sport.
“(I play ice hockey because) I love the sport, and it’s fun, challenging, and a great way to relive frustration.” Mr. Flanagan revealed. Last season his team was undefeated, meaning they won all of the thirteen games they played. But this season they only have played two games. One of them they won and the other was a tie.
