Now you’ve heard of creativity, but this is creativity that you can drink from! Mrs. Wallen’s art class started to work on some mugs in January as part of a request from Ms. Vreeland, a library specialist.
Ms. Vreeland, in an effort to ‘go green’ asked Mrs. Wallen if her class would create First Friday mugs. (First Friday is a type of open mic extravaganza that meets the first Friday of every month; they have cookies, muffins, and coffee, which is where the mugs come in)
Previously, paper cups were used, which is bad for the environment. The mugs took two weeks, in accumulation, to make. Unfortunately, Mrs. Wallen’s classes had other assignments to attend to, and were unable to complete the mugs until mid-April.
The mugs have a very intricate creation process. “First we design the mug on paper, than we cut the template from the paper, then we do our slab construction. We roll the clay out, we use our template to cut out the pieces, construct the mug to the design, add surface decoration, let it dry, fire it in a kiln, glaze it, re-fire it, and then you are all finished,” said Mrs. Wallen.
Every First Friday of the month, you can go down to the Media center during lunchtime, and use whatever mugs you would like.
The LAST open mic/pecha kucha of this school year will be held Friday, May 21st.
