Ms. Roush, the school librarian, hopes to raise money for books by stuffing people full of pasta. On Wednesday, September 22, the Spaghetti in the Stacks fundraiser will take place. “It’s relatively easy to make. No baking involved!” Exclaimed Ms. Roush, who loved the idea of an easy to make meal. The meeting and dinner will take place from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Tickets cost $10 per person, and they need to be purchased by September 15. There are only 100 tickets available. This event will count as one of the required September meetings.

Ms. Roush drew her inspiration for this event from a similar event that a public library had done before. She figured that food would attract more people. The culinary classes will be contributing their time and skill to make the spaghetti, and the various toppings such as tomato sauce, white sauce, and meatballs.

Spaghetti in the Stacks is just one of many fundraisers. The proceeds of the brick sales and the money earned from the recycling program also benefit the library. “I would say with newspaper and recycling [fundraisers], about $1,000 have been raised,” said Ms. Roush.

People interested in donating don’t necessarily have to come to the dinner. Donations are more than welcome; dinner is only optional. “Donate as much as you want to donate,” said Ms. Roush.

Mrs. Roush plans to buy “all sorts” of different books. She especially plans to buy plenty of fiction books, because those are checked out quite often. Ms. Roush reminds people to “buy tickets, please!”

This year, Mrs. O’Mara and Ms. Roush collaborated to create a new tradition. Instead of the old “class shirts,” there is a new design with a whole new name: Homecoming shirts.

“The fronts are all the same this year,” explained Mrs. O’Mara, the freshman class sponsor. This year’s shirt has an Osceola helmet facing off with this year’s Homecoming rival, Northeast High. To customize each class’s t-shirt, the freshmen will have white, the sophomores will have orange, the juniors will have blue, and the seniors will have black. This year’s design is credited to Ms. Roush. “These shirts were designed to bring back spirit and school unity,” she explained.

The shirts are already on sale for $10 and the deadline to pre-order is Sept. 8th. If you would like to take part in this new tradition, see your class sponsor.

Freshmen – Rm. 263

Sophomores – Rm. 264

Juniors – Rm. 180 and 261

Editor-In-Chief

Mr. Bohnet didn’t hesitate when he was offered “a great opportunity” to be principal of Osceola High School.

“The fundamental concept is very intriguing,” said Mr. Bohnet, graduate of Olivet College and Nova Southeastern University. After Mr. Bohnet’s sister, a math teacher at Clearwater Fundamental informed him about the fundamental program and the way it operates, Mr. Bohnet developed a desire to “work in this type of setting.”

For the past six years, Mr. Bohnet was principal of Dixie Hollins High School. “It was a good school,” said Mr. Bohnet. “We improved on a lot of things.” However, Mr. Bohnet is only looking “to improve what’s already a good thing” at Osceola High School.

“Right away, not too many changes,” said Mr. Bohnet. “I like all the things that are in place.”

The only immediate change will be the dress code. “We’re going back to the true Fundamental dress code,” stated Mr. Bohnet. All students will be required to wear ankle-length pants, meaning no capris. Girls can wear skirts or dresses, but they must fall no more than two inches above the knee. Girls’ shoulders must be covered, and boys must wear sleeves. As for the shoes, no flip flops will be allowed and sandals must have straps on the back, same as last year.

The new principal of OHS will be anything but invisible in the halls this year, considering his six feet, nine inch frame. “It’s great,” said Mr. Bohnet, “I can see over everything. No one can miss me.”

Quick fun facts about Mr. Bohnet:

His favorite sport to play, and watch, is golf.

His two favorite sports teams are the Rays (baseball) and Magic (basketball).

He enjoys the beach and swimming.

He has two sons: Cody, a recent graduate of Dixie who will soon attend SPC, and his eldest, Shawn, who is 22 years of age.

The latest and last Chief Edition of the 2009-2010 school year is hitting the hallways today! Want to find out how to make this summer the greatest? Want help to find a job? How about finding out where your fellow seniors are heading off to next fall?

“I’m so excited that it is the last issue. We put a lot of work into it and it turned out good!” said Laura LaLande, the Chief Edition’s top photographer . Adam Shown, one of the staff writers, expresses his excitement for his story about a summer full of music. “We’re teenagers, we love music. Well, I do. If I had to lose everything and keep one thing, I’d pick music.”

To find out what all the excitement is about, make sure to grab your copy in student services, the media center or room 166.

By Adam Shown

The library is closed – everyone knows that. But what they don’t know is that even though the librarians aren’t loaning books any more this year, they still have a lot of work to do.

“I started with forty-nine pages of missing items,” Ms. Roush, OHS librarian of thirteen years, said. “Now I’m down to six. Some stuff has been missing for years, but most of it we definitely had back in January and February.” Some kids’ pockets are going to be hurting, though. “Some people have fines upwards of twenty or thirty dollars. Yes, it is possible – when you have three books out months past the due date, we’re talking about $12.60 a book.” And seniors beware – if you have outstanding fines, you can walk, but you can’t officially graduate.

Tiffany Mattox, 12th, has a fine. “I forget about it every day,” she said. Nickie Niquette, also 12th, said, “I think it’s disrespectful to not return the books because you’re depriving someone else who might want to read them.”

Looks like our seniors are walking on sunshine! This Thursday, the new graduates paraded through the halls in traditional caps and gowns during the first annual “Senior Walk”, a new tradition for OHS. Students and teachers laughed, cried, shook hands and hugged during the walk. “I actually thought it was going to be pretty lame, but it ended up being a lot of fun,” said Sarah Hooker, 12th. “I mostly just laughed at everyone who has to come back to school next year.” Chelsea Allison, 12th, said, “After I tripped on my gown, it hit me. I’m actually graduating. I really can’t believe I’m a senior and that high school graduation is finally here.”

Congratulations once again to all you seniors out there, and good luck in the future!

May 20th, Osceola High Drama students and kids half your size put on a magnificent play: your very own, The Wizard of Oz! The classic characters from Tin Man to Toto outshined the unthinkable. The realistic props made it seem even more real. They even had a real dog that was up for petting free of charge after the play! Not only were Osceola High students present, but students from middle schools such as Osceola Middle attended. “I was very impressed by the play and how well it was presented and put together,” Ms. Dannewitz, Osceola Middle School chorus teacher stated. “It was long and good.” Luke Silbert, 9th, said afterwards. Katherine, 10th, said, “Naomi was the perfect person to play Dorothy because she has a good voice and her personality fit the role.”
